It is not one big run that changes you — it is the small runs you keep doing, week after week. That is why the challenge lasts a whole year. Here is what steady, regular running does for your body and mind.
Running trains your heart to pump more blood with less effort, helping lower blood pressure and resting heart rate.
It burns more energy per minute than most activities and helps your body use insulin better — useful at any age.
As a weight-bearing exercise, running helps build bone density and leg strength that protect you as you get older.
Regular runs lift your mood, ease anxiety and help you think more clearly through a busy day.
Active people tend to fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly — and better sleep means better recovery.
Running with a club and a shared goal makes it far easier to keep showing up, week after week.
New to running? These six habits will carry you through the whole year.
Try 1 minute running, 2 minutes walking. Build up slowly — add no more than about 10% to your weekly distance.
Run before 7 am or after sunset. Wear light, breathable clothing and a cap, and slow down on humid days.
Have water before you head out. On longer runs carry water, and top up salts afterwards — tender coconut water works well.
Five minutes of brisk walking and leg swings before; an easy walk and gentle stretches after.
Proper running shoes that fit well protect your knees and ankles. Replace them every 600–800 km.
Take at least one or two rest days a week. If something hurts sharply, stop and let it heal.
Health note: if you have a heart condition, diabetes, high blood pressure, are pregnant, or have not exercised in a long time, check with your doctor before starting a running programme.
